Lyrical/Contemporary
An expressive form of dance that incorporates ballet and modern technique, the strength and control of jazz technique, and many story-telling elements. Interpretive movements emphasize the arms and the release of the upper body contrasted with innovative leaps, jumps, turns and strong lines. This dance form has been popularized in recent years in all venues, including the popular TV show, So You Think You Can Dance. Lyrical classes are one hour long and include a full center warm-up that full stretches the dancer and adds strength and control exercises by utilizing some pilates techniques. Dancers then move across the floor with floor progressions, and center combinations that incorporate emotion, story concepts and innovative choreography. Lyrical choreography strives to connect the dancer to the audience through a variety of emotions.
