Hip Hop
Hip Hop is a street-born dance form that incorporates a variety of old and new urban dance styles. Teachers set rhythm-based movement to old-school & modern day hip-hop music. What separates hip-hop dance from other forms of dance is that it is often freestyle (improvisational) in nature and hip-hop dancers frequently engage in class exercises that encourage this creativity and freedom of movement. Class structure includes a high-impact center warm-up that allows students to dance from the very start of class. Floor work includes strengthening exercises and an introduction to break dancing by learning the “6 step”. Progressions across the floor include improvisational walks, tricks such as kartwheels, floor-drops, and more. Center combinations are taught at the end of every class and will culminate into full routine throughout the year. Age-appropriate music & choreography is strongly considered by the teacher.
Students age 6 – 8 are offered Kid Funk, a 45-minute class introduction to hip hop that uses kids music to introduce the basic concepts of hip hop styles & movement. Students age 9 and up are placed in our Hip Hop I or Hip Hop II program which are both 1-hour classes. Ages 6 and up
